ABSTRACTS:

5:00 PM Session: Monitoring IBM i with Open Source

Tune in or join us to hear Charlie Hird describe how he explored several different Open Source options for monitoring the IBM i.

Touching on Nagios Core, NEMS Linux, Nagios TV, and Cockpit which are all free, Open Source solutions, available to the public.

He'll outline the steps he went through, starting from the IBM provided solutions, to third party solutions and eventually building an up-to-date plugin for Nagios. A demo of the final solution will be given to demonstrate what is possible.

6:45 PM (Dessert) Session: RPG/RDi Developers' Q&A

Do you have a question you've been wrestling with related to development using RPG and/or RDi? Before diving into the main topic for this part of the meeting, Jon and Susan will open the floor for a few minutes to questions or discussions on topics of your choice.

7:00 PM Session: Processing JSON with RPG

JSON becomes more and more important by the day. If you are not already working with it in your IBM i applications, you soon will be. Simply put, JSON is the fastest growing data interchange medium out there. There are a number of ways for IBM i programmers to work with JSON - using native RPG operations and/or using SQL as well as a variety other tools.

This session will focus on the use RPG's native DATA-INTO and DATA-GEN op-codes to both consume and generate JSON. Those operations require code to parse and/or generate a specific format of data. But we don't need to write our own code - we'll use Scott Klement's free open source YAJL library in our examples.

You may be surprised at how simple it is to consume and/or generate JSON using your existing RPG skills.
